Character: Euphemia li Britannia
Variation: DVD Cover Illustration
Series: Code Geass (Anime and Manga)
Debuted: Anime North 2009
Construction Notes: I only had 2 weeks to work on this costume, but I had an entire semester’s-worth to plan it out and choose my fabrics. So, even considering the short turn-around time, I’m still pretty pleased with how this costume turned out.
Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of cream and off-white. It tends to look bad against my skin tone. But I decided to break up the monotony by choosing fabrics with slight detail and texture, like lace, which I used for insets on the sleeves, and embossed bridal satin, used on the bodice and different parts of the sleeves. I used the embossed satin for the bottom layer of the skirt, while using chiffon for the upper layers.
To me, Euphemia’s skirt seemed to have a ‘handkerchief’ type shape to one of the layers, so I cut the bottom-most chiffon layer out as a square, and draped it accordingly to get that somewhat pointed, somewhat diagonal shape.
Personal Thoughts: Euphemia is an incredibly special character to me. I saw the artbook image featuring this gown, and I knew I had to make it! At the time when I was considering making this costume, I had been in touch with a good friend I had made online, who geeked-out about Code Geass with me and also showed interest in dabbling in cosplay himself. I was able to talk him into cosplaying as Suzaku with me (which wasn’t hard at all), and we even decided to formulate a skit for Anime North’s Skit Contest/Masquerade. It was one of the best times I’ve had while cosplaying, and I met one of my, to this date, best friends in the process.
