Character: Ciel Phantomhive
Variation: Chess Illustration
Series: Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler (Anime and Manga)
Debuted: AWA 2010
Construction Notes: Two words: ruffle vomit. I ended up going with cotton broadcloth for the body of the blouse along with all the ruffly pieces, with eyelet trim. The sleeves looked sheer in the source artwork, so I used chiffon for those. The vest is black cotton sateen, lined, with frog closures in the front. The ruffly parts along the bottom are attached to the vest. I strung some beads and baubles from the bottom frills for a little added interest.
Now, the bottom of the outfit isn’t visible, so I made knee-length shorts with a sheer ruffle along the bottom cuffs.
Ciel’s headpiece is a bunch of lilies, originally white and pink, that I spray painted black and strung together on a piece of wire.
Personal Thoughts: Kuroshitsuji is full of very pretty, elegant, macabre designs. I loved the chess illustration since it had that sense of elegance and macabre, but also looked light and easy to wear. After wearing my last Ciel costume, which was layer upon layer of satin and micro-suede, I really wanted comfort.
